Southeastern Diabetes Education Services Educator and Volunteer

Southeastern Diabetes Education Services serves to help encourage and educate children with diabetes and their families about living well with diabetes.

As an educator: I raise awareness of eating disorders in the diabetes community by speaking to children and their families about the dangers of eating disorders at camps and conferences held throughout the year including:

-Teen Leadership Weekend, Wetumpka, AL February 13, 2016
-Auburn Community Meeting, Opelika, AL April 10, 2016

As a volunteer: I help raise money for the Camp Seale Harris organization by volunteering at Diabetes Walks throughout the year including:

- Mistletoe Madness, Huntsville, AL December 6, 2015
- Diabetes Walk Fundraiser, Hoover, AL March 6, 2016

As a volunteer: I also attend Camp Seale Harris Day Camps where I help families check into camp, accompany children to camp activities, and oversee nutrition so the children are educated on how much insulin to administer for provided meals and snacks.

Brain Awareness Week Activity Leader

Brain Awareness Week is an annual program held at the McWane Science Center in Birmingham, Alabama where neuroscientist graduate students educate children on the brain and the field of neuroscience. As an activity leader, I was responsible for educating volunteers and children about the eye and the visual system.

Discoveries in the Making Speaker

Discoveries in the Making is an educational outreach program held at local public libraries in the Birmingham area allowing researchers to share with local community the newest discoveries being made in science at UAB. As a speaker, I present results from my laboratory at many of the local libraries throughout the year.
